Unveiling The Leela Palace
Born in 1922 in Kerala, Capt. C. P. Krishnan Nair—Chairman and founder of The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts—served in the Indian Army’s Maratha Light Infantry until 1951.
That same year, he married Leela, the daughter of a prominent handloom entrepreneur, whose enduring influence continued to inspire him.
In 1987, at the age of 65, Nair established the first Leela hotel, marking the beginning of a legacy in Indian luxury hospitality.
The luxury hotel group manages seven award-winning hotels in India which includes prime urban locations in Bangalore, Gurgaon, Mumbai, New Delhi and magical holiday escapes in Goa, Kovalam and Udaipur.
Hotels and Resorts is dedicated to extending warm, gracious, anticipatory service in settings that ideally capture the essence of India.
The group has marketing alliances with Germany-based Kempinski, US-based Preferred Hotels & Resorts and is a member of Global Hotel Alliance based in Switzerland.
Spanning three acres in Chanakyapuri, The Leela Palace New Delhi adjoins the Diplomatic Enclave—home to the majority of the capital’s foreign embassies and missions—making it the premier choice for heads of state and official delegations.
This iconic palace style Five Star Hotel makes a significant statement in terms of architecture and intent.
Poised to join the ranks of the world’s most celebrated hotels, The Leela Palace New Delhi melds Lutyens-inspired architecture with Mrs. Madhu Nair’s elegant embellishments, offering a level of refinement and spaciousness that rivals the grandest palaces on earth.
Stepping into Grandeur: Our Evening at The Leela Palace
At approximately 7:30 PM IST, Sunil and I stepped into The Leela Palace. We were immediately embraced by the grand lobby—expansive, softly illuminated, and impeccably attended by courteous professionals.
We approached the concierge desk to learn more about the hotel’s amenities and spaces worth exploring during our visit.
Our journey began at The Qube restaurant.
The Qube showcases an expansive lawn highlighted by a captivating sculpture from Mr. Satish Gupta.
We also made our way to The Library, where a handpicked array of first-edition volumes provides a subtle nod to lovers of literature.
Thereafter, we visited the Lobby Lounge, followed by a stop at Megu, the hotel’s renowned Japanese restaurant.
Megu—which means “blessing” in Japanese—offers a contemporary take on traditional Japanese cuisine.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by a Japanese hostess who graciously gave us a tour of the restaurant and kindly offered to take a few photographs for us.
We then went to 10th floor where we got to see French-Italian restaurant Le Cirque.
We then made our way to Jamavar, the hotel’s signature Indian restaurant—its name inspired by the intricate weaving patterns found on Kashmiri pashmina shawls. We reserved a table for two for dinner at 8:15 PM IST.
Miss Upasana who did our reservation in advance greeted us warmly and helped us to get a comfortable place to sit.
Mr. Sandeep helped us with the menu. We ordered Amritsari Kulcha along with Pindi Chana and Rasmalai as dessert.
Being stuffed bread, we found it challenging to complete all the Amritsari Kulchas on our plates but somehow we managed :)
I paid the bill and a rewarding tip to the staff.
Ms Upasana offered Meetha pan which we savoured a lot.
At 9:30 PM IST, we bade the hotel farewell, carrying cherished moments with us.
