Pursuing a hobby as only hobby is not waste of time. It makes you creative and keeps you happy from inside. But overdoing it would certainly become waste of time.
Hobby gives you a break from your monotonous life. It also fills you with sense of achievement because you have done something which is different from your daily routine.
Pursue your hobby with full heart and will, but not at the cost of important activities of your life. Both are important.
