There is standalone version and there is online version also known as Microsoft 365 (earlier Office 365). Standalone versions don't get updated with new features whereas Microsoft 365 keeps including new features.
Currently, I am using latest Microsoft 365 version which is version 2019. There are older versions also in market like version 2016, 2013, 2010 and 2007.
Always use the latest version to enjoy the time saving tools and features which you can't find in the older versions.
